The Building Thermal Energy Science Group of the NREL is seeking for a graduate intern able to pursue research in cement decarbonization for the deployment of low carbon cementitious building materials and CO2 mineralization of cementitious materials. The NREL campus is a living experiment filled with curious researchers developing advanced energy technologies. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of experienced researchers to support projects on advanced Building construction materials. The candidate shall be able to support cutting-edge laboratory capabilities and infrastructure to advance R&DD, process, and manufacturing of novel low- to negative-carbon cementitious material systems.General Duties and Responsibilities:The successful candidate should have a strong background and understanding of cementitious materials science for building construction applications. The candidate will contribute to the development of alternative cements and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) using CO2 mineralization strategies. The researcher is expected to document work/results in reports and presentations.Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Process various low-value byproducts from industrial and biomass sources into SCMs for cement substitution via thermal, chemical, and mechanical approaches.

Work with industrial partners to upgrade SCMs via CO2 mineralization.

Characterize materials using techniques including, but not limited to: SEM, FTIR, XRF, XRD, surface area and pore size, calorimetry, TGA, ultimate/proximate analysis, etc.

Assist in project management, including report writings, paper publications, and presentations in program review or conferences.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:The researcher has the opportunity to get involved in in-depth and multifaceted disciplines in civil, chemical, and materials engineering. The candidate should demonstrate expertise in the area of inorganic materials processing and design for cementitious composites.

Mechanics of Materials; Solid Mechanics; Civil Engineering Design; Fluid Mechanics; Physics of Renewable Energy Systems; Urban Energy Systems and Policy

Strong background in civil engineering (i.e. structural) theory, finite elemental analysis, and experiments including data acquisition.

Knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA).

Knowledge of inorganic and/or organic supplementary cementitious materials.

Experience with analytical instruments (i.e. XRD, TGA, calorimetry, SEM, etc.)

Knowledge of programming for data analysis (i.e. MATLAB, Python)

Demonstrated research capability and creativity to solve challenging problems, as well as the ability to work well in a team.

.Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.
