Research Associate

Sterling Martin Associates (SMA) is a leading, national executive recruiting firm with offices in Annapolis, MD, Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, Portland, OR, and Orange County, CA. We are currently seeking a part-time Research Associate who will be responsible for conducting research to identify executives for our client organizations. This position reports to the Senior Director, Marketing and Research.

The position is based virtually with a preference for candidates based in the Annapolis, MD, greater Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD areas (DMV) to facilitate occasional in person meetings with other SMA staff.

We estimate approximately 20 hours per week for this role with flexibility in how to schedule your time. We have two standing one-hour meetings during the week which will require virtual attendance via Zoom.

Position Responsibilities

Conduct research using such tools as LinkedIn, Association Insights, Guidestar, SMA’s internal database and other databases to which we subscribe to identify potential candidates for current searches.

Research contact information for the identified candidates.

Add prospective candidate information into SMA’s database (applicant tracking system).

Participate virtually in weekly Recruiter/Research update calls.

Source additional locations for possible candidates such as affinity groups, member organization lists, Guidestar and conference attendee lists.

Proactively look for ways to incorporate new technology (e.g., AI software) into current practices.

Work with and support the Senior Executive Recruitment team.

Send outreach email campaigns to potential candidates using e-mail merge on Microsoft Office.

Perform internet background checks for potential candidates.

Desired Qualifications

Extensive experience conducting Internet and database research, including using search strategies such as Boolean and devising own strategies.

A strong “detective” mentality and a desire to dig deep for information.

A bachelor’s or master’s in library science is a strong plus. High level of fluency with Microsoft 365 products such as Excel, Word, etc.

Ability to work independently, accurately, and briskly, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

Highly dependable, including good written and verbal communication skills and follow-through.
